We wanted to share some upcoming cultural events and festivals in 2023 & 2024. These events specifically cater to African American culture. These events are great opportunities to immerse ourselves in the richness of our heritage, connect with the community, and celebrate our shared experiences.
FESTIVALS & EVENTS 2023
- Essence Festival (New Orleans, USA): June 29 – July 3, 2023 The Essence Festival is a celebration of African American culture, music, and empowerment. With its lineup of incredible performances, insightful panel discussions, and a marketplace showcasing black-owned businesses, this festival is not to be missed!
- Afrofuture Festival formally known as Afrochella (Accra, Ghana): December 2023 (exact dates to be announced). For those seeking a truly immersive cultural experience, Afrochella is a vibrant festival held in Accra, Ghana. It celebrates African music, art, fashion, and food, fostering connections between Africans and the African diaspora. Sign up for early access More info here:
- Harlem Week (New York City, USA): August 10 – August 20, 2023 Harlem Week is a month-long celebration of the history, culture, and achievements of Harlem. Through concerts, fashion shows, art exhibitions, and community events, it offers a chance to honor and appreciate the richness of African American culture.
- The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. is hosting a variety of events throughout the year, including lectures, performances, and exhibitions.
- The Carifesta in Charleston South Carolina: June 29 – July 1, 2023, is a festival that brings together artists, musicians, and performers from all over the region to celebrate Caribbean culture.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS 2024
- National Black Theatre Festival (Winston-Salem, USA): July 29 – August 3, 2024. This biennial gathering of African American playwrights, actors, and theater enthusiasts is a fantastic opportunity to experience powerful performances, participate in workshops, and engage in meaningful discussions about black theater.
- Pan-African Film and Arts Festival (Los Angeles, USA): Dates to be announced. The Pan-African Film and Arts Festival is the largest black film festival in the United States. It showcases an impressive selection of films, art exhibitions, and live performances that highlight the diversity and depth of the African diaspora’s experiences.
- The Cape Town Jazz Festival in South Africa: February 23 – 24, 2024, is one of the largest jazz festivals in the world, with performances by both local and international artists. Tickets here.
- The Afro-Latino Festival in New York City: Dates to be announced, The Afro-Latino Festival in New York City celebrates its 10th Anniverays the contributions of Afro-Latinx people to the arts, music, and culture.
